Cosmopolitan Analysis

The use of the image of BeyoncĂ© can be regarded as juxtaposed with the opposition of the dark manly colours and her sexy feminine looks. the black dress connotes power and respect however the use of her cleavage and her long curly shimmering hair it shows off just how sexy BeyoncĂ© really is. The covering of the title shows that they expect the reader to already know what the magazine is called due to there layout with the main image in the dead centre and having tag lines and headings all over the sides, also they may have done this to bring more attention to the image of the 'FFF of the year' (FFF- Fun Fearless Female). With the use of the different subheadings they may have been used for a comedic reason with the sub heading of 'Never lose your orgasm again' suggesting that you may be able to miss place it.

With the use of bright colours it grabs the readers attention to try and speak tot hem before they even begin to read it by being bright and flashy and looks as if you want to buy it because of how colourful it is.

Consolidation Task

For my media text i have chosen the GQ magazine cover. The demographic audience for this magazine is males aged 20-35. Whereas the psychographic audience is business men who are into the latest fashion range. The psychographic audience is also men who are interested in general knowledge and technology this is reinforced buy the quote ‘the 14 most annoying tweets on twitter’ in the secondary article. On the front of the magazine Joseph Gordon Levitt is dressed in business wear, this attracts the target audience as it shows men what they could  look like if they read the and take tips from this magazine. The style of the magazine is very formal this reinforces the purpose. The colour scheme is red, white and grey. Red is used in the magazine to give it a modern look and feel, it is also used to highlight the key information that the editors want to catch your eye with. The colour red is vibrant and has connotations of energy. the colour red ensures that it stands out over all the other magazines.
The product addresses the reader by the placement of the model he is central making eye contact directly addressing the reader. The colours and layout of the magazine work together to make the product look fresh and modern, further inviting both the demographic and psychographic audience.
This product represents the main model as a typical business man to help to appeal to the reader who is an everyday business man. the reason this will appeal to the reader is because it could make them feel as if even tho they are just an everyday man they can look like him and be as rich as him which will appeal to the envious side of the reader to show that if you work hard enough then you can be this kind of man you can be rich and successful and maybe you will be on the front of GQ magazine being called a 'boy wonder'.

Use of Camera Angles and Movement in The Shining clip

  1. What camera angles and shots are used when Wendy is reading the type writer?
The camera angles and shots are as follows we first have a medium close-up shot of Wendy walking towards the typewriter, then we have a low angle shot of her looking at the typewriter then a POV shot of her looking through the writing upon the typewriter.
2. How do the make us feel?

-Medium close-up shot: This shot makes us feel as if there is nothing out of the ordinary as if it is just a woman walking into the room looking at a type writer.

-Low angle shot: This shot makes the viewer feel that the woman is superior however this is juxtaposed where the woman is very fearful of what is written on the type writer and is in-fact inferior and scared of the writing of what Jack wrote.

-POV shot: This shot makes the viewer feel the fear that Wendy is feeling of what the type writer is constantly repeating of the phrase 'All work and no  play makes Jack a dull boy' which strikes fear into the heart of Wendy because they have been there for weeks and all he has done is repeat the phrase over and over again for hundreds of hundreds of pages.

3. Where does the zoom-in take place, and what is its effect?
The zoom-in takes place as she moves away from the type writer and looks more towards the finished pile of paper as she looks down at them. The zoom-in is used to emphasise upon the writing and the amount of times he has wrote it over and over and over again. The effect on the viewer is to try and worry them as to why Jack has been writing it so many times and to maybe worry them about Wendy's safety incase Jack has gone insane. the zoom in shows that at first she was just looking at a stack of paper and there is nothing to it and as it zooms in we see that her worries are confirmed and Jack is in-fact crazy. Also we see some of the desk before the zoom in which shows that she is still aware of the world around her and as she zooms in we see that she is oblivious to everything around her which allows jack to enter the room unnoticed.

4. What camera shots are used as jack moves into the room?

The camera shots used as jack enters are as follows we look over Jacks shoulder to swatch Wendy read through his work then we have a medium shot

  • An over the shoulder shot
  • A medium shot
5. How do they make us feel?

-Over the shoulder shot: This makes the viewer feel that Wendy is in danger and the baseball bat may have to be used against her own husband's insanity is now out of control and we become worried that Wendy may get attacked from behind without her even knowing it because of how silently Jack entered the scene. This shot makes the viewer fear for Wendy because someone has been quietly watching her look through Jack's 'work' and has gingerly creeped over to watch her silently and to scare her by suddenly speaking to her and make her scream.

-Medium shot: This makes the reader feel fearful that jack may do something to his wife as he talks he slowly walks over to the type writer harmlessly asking her what she is doing down here however the way he asks her is an extremely worrying tone of voice as if, if she was to say the wrong thing he would attack her.

Analysis of Hawaii Five O

Analysis of Hawaii Five O.

  • How does the programme show the crime drama genre?
Hawaii five O shows that it is a crime drama TV through the use of typical features such as props. some props used on the show are very widely used in other TV crime dramas such as police badges. Another typical feature is the setting they use not necessarily Hawaii but more along the lines of the prison and the police headquarters and the labs. We can also see props being used in other TV shows such as in new tricks where they use the police cars to show how it is a crime drama with the use of crime tackling teams such as the police which makes the audience think that if the police officers are involved in a show your first idea is that this show could be a crime drama sort of show.

Another way that it is shown to be a crime drama is through the use of its characters as the 'Heroes' being the group of police officers and the 'villain' being a criminal in the episode we watched the villain was the brother of a corrupt ex cop who wanted revenge on the officer who killed his brother. there are other villains but he was more the master mind behind the operation. In the episode watched there are also a few ambiguous characters who's loyalty is unclear such as the man who helps Chin in the prison and Chins cousins boyfriend who is very ambiguous receiving phone calls from a hidden number. Also we have a few experts in the show who help to find out who has been using Chin's phone to try and keep his fellow officers away from him. Another show which uses 'Heroes and Villains' are in the SIFI show Doctor Who where the heroes is the doctor and his companion who are very humanistic looking characters which makes the audience feel close to them and more relatable to them where as the villains are very different looking and alien like which plays on the audience's built in nature of don't trust something that isn't human.

A final way in which the crime drama is shown is with the use of the camera work. some of the camera work shows how action packed a crime drama is by having a mid body shot looking at one of the officers in Chin's house looking straight along the muzzle of the gun to connote violence and justice. Editing was also used to try and make the show look like a crime drama by editing the flash bangs and the flash of the gun when shot as the team make their way through the prison.
  • Does the episode follow a recognisable narrative structure? (Todorov or McKee)
Yes this episode does follow a narrative structure but McKee's narrative theory of it starting with the inciting incident, which would be the 'flash forward' into seeing what is going to happen then it goes into progressive complications where we learn why Chin is missing and where he is, then the crisis hits where Chin is in prison with an ex corrupt cop who wants him dead, at this point the rest of the team find the main villain and take him down to learn Chin's location. The climax occurs and Chin gets captured by the ex cop and stabbed and the team are coming to rescue him. Finally the resolution where Chin is safe and the main villain is captured and locked away. Also we see this 'flash forward' imagery in the second episode of the new Doctor Who series where we see the doctor go back in time at the beginning the try and kill Davoros but we haven't yet found out his specific motive.
  • How does the programme use enigmas?
They have created an enigma by making the audience think why have they locked Chin in prison what is the motive and who is it who has put Chin in there. Also they have created an parallel enigma for the rest of the team which is as to where Chin is who has taken him and why have they taken him away. All of the enigmas are answered by the end of the show because it was a dead cops brother who wanted revenge and they all rescued Chin and saved the day.
  • What evidence is there of both a series and a serial? (series tell a different story each episode, serials have on going stories[like soap operas])
The evidence of a series is that there is a new story of Chin being drugged and locked in a prison whist he is out cold and his teammates have to go find him before he dies at the hands of a bitter ex cop who was sent to prison due to his corruption. However there are also features of a serials about Chin's dead wife and the villains motive links into an ongoing story of Chin killing his brother because he killed his wife and the bitter ex cop was sent to prison there is a very high chance that he was part of an old story line which may have been forgotten. Chins story of being kidnapped and put into a prison is classed as a simple narrative where as with the new story of chins cousin and her boyfriend would be a more complicated narrative because this story will be show over the course of multiple episodes. this keeps the audience intrigued and try to get them to watch it next week to help develop there knowledge on the new story line which is now being developed throughout then next few episodes.

Magazine Cover

Magazine Cover.

this magazine cover follows the codes and conventions by having a mast head, barcode, feature article photograph, headline, strap lines, pug/ear and a date and price.

The mode of address is done by telling the audience that the new superman movie is coming out 'superman returns' this is done with a splatter behind the word new movie which shows just how informal this magazine is to be able to tell the audience what they are trying to tell you but tell you in there terminology since this magazine is aimed at children.

However this magazine is also subverting the rules for magazines because normally when the feature article photograph is a person they look straight into the camera which grabs the attention of the reader by making it seem like the persons attention is on them where as in this photograph it seems that Superman's attention is on something else maybe something more important which could entice the reader to find out what superman is looking so seriously at, which would make the buyer want to buy the said item.

Fim Poster

 Absolutely Anything-
The colour yellow holds connotations of happiness and enjoyment which allows you to know that this film is a comedy which will allow you to feel both happiness and enjoyment.

The facial expression of Simon Pegg makes him look very confused and shocked which helps the audience see that they to will have a shock if they are to watch this film.

Game Packaging
Grand Theft Auto V-
The colour of the title is white which holds connotations of innocence and purity. This is very ironic as the Grand Theft Auto franchise is widely known for being very violent and crime based. The colour of the 'V' logo is green, which has connotations of money and envy. These are major themes within the game, which makes the choice of colour very suitable. The expressions on the faces of the characters are also very mischievous and focus which gives you the idea there may be some mischief within the game. You also see weapons and sports cars which also has connotations of money and violence.
